Another awesome May here in the Lowcountry of Beaufort and Hilton Head, SC! We had awesome weather and even better fishing. What I love so much about May is not only the great inshore fishing for redfish but also being able to target Cobia!
Sight fishing Cobia in the Broad river has always been one of my favorite things to do here in Beaufort, SC. I was literally born and raised on the Broad River and always feel lucky to able to share this special fishery I call home with anglers from all over. The season this year proved to be one of the better cobia seasons I have seen in the last 10 years. With SCDNR closing the month of May and making Cobia strictly catch and release has helped our fishery tremendously. I have been practicing catch and release with these fish for 6 years now and happy to see it working. There were a lot of bigger fish this year which is a good sign for and even better future.
Inshore fishing for Redfish, Speckled Sea Trout, and Flounder has also been great! Lots of other seasonal species are coming in as well including Spanish, Blue Fish, Sharks, Jacks, and Triple Tail. I have been fishing a lot of low tides and flood tides with fly fishing anglers sight fishing to tailing redfish, small schools, and single fish cruising the shallow flats. With the warmer weather now approaching it is key to fish the early morning or late evening tides for the best action.
Light tackle fishing has also been great using mostly live mud minnow, live shrimp, and an assortment of artificial baits. During the month of May I love fishing the falling or rising tide as the fish are coming in and out of the grass. So many great days on my 22ft pathfinder with up to 4 anglers enjoying the waters of Beaufort, SC. Love teaching new anglers and young kids about our fishery here and most of all love watching them catch fish! Excited for June and the upcoming summer fishing always brings a great inshore bite for Redfish and of course Tarpon! Enjoy a few photos below of recent trips here in Beaufort and Hilton Head, SC!
