Fishing has been really good in February, and having good weather has definitely been the key to success. Sight fishing for redfish in big schools has been the primary focus, and using smaller, lighter-colored presentations has led to some great catches. With clear water conditions and mild winter temperatures, anglers have had excellent opportunities to target inshore species.
One interesting observation this season is that the tide has not necessarily been a great factor compared to the sun. The fish have been biting and fighting a lot, showing strong activity during optimal sunlight hours. Additionally, the late January snow days in Beaufort did not have any noticeable effect on fishing conditions in February.

Fly Fishing
Light-colored flies have been extremely effective in the clear winter waters, especially when sight casting to schooling Redfish. The combination of good weather and great visibility has made for some memorable fly-fishing experiences. The tide has not been necessarily a great factor compared to the sun. The fish have been biting and fighting a lot.

Soft plastics, particularly white Gulp, have been producing solid results. Mud minnows remain my go-to bait in the winter, especially when fishing for Redfish and Black Drum. The Redfish have been schooled up tightly, making for some exciting action on light tackle.
As temperatures continue to warm up, these schools will start to break apart, and we will soon be able to target tailing Redfish in the grass once again. The transition into spring promises even more exciting opportunities for anglers in the Lowcountry.
